Michael Medved, Mitt Romney: What's 12 million Mormons, more or less? (Less)

Michael Medved is usually very careful with facts - or so I've always thought. I may have to rethink that. You may have to rethink that too, after reading this.

The depth of his knowledge seems amazing. He knew and corrected someone on today's show about Harry Truman's politics!

Why, then, does he mindlessly repeat Mormon church PR that there are 12 million members worldwide? (As he did on "The Mitt Romney Show" of Monday, January 8.) How does he know that number is true? (Did he pray about it?) Where does that number come from? Has it ever been independently verified?

The number simply comes from press releases the Mormon church puts out, like this one for example. The releases often end with this:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — one of the fastest-growing Christian faiths — has a worldwide membership of more than 12 million.

During their General Conference (a biennial meeting in Salt Lake where they get their marching orders), the local church media outlets repeat this "fact" ad nauseam. And you remember what the Nazi's said. "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."

Michael Medved believes it. In fact, he even parroted their other "fact," that they're one of the fastest growing Christian faiths. LIE, LIE, LIE!

Credit to Mr. Medved. Actually, he said "it's one of the fastest growing religions in the world," which is what the Mormon church used to say, until we Christian evangelists kept pointing out it wasn't true. The fact is, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and has been for some time. (Memo to Mr. Medved: better bone up on their PR - and the facts.) But if growth is an indicator of truth, then you should become a Muslim, for clearly, 1 Billion Muslims can't be wrong, can they?

So the Mormon church was forced to change its original sin for another lie. Whether or not it's one of the fastest growing organized religions, Mormonism is NOT Christian. The god of Mormonism is NOT the God of the Bible. Their god had a father, who had a father, who had a father, etc. Men cannot become gods and rule their own planet. I trust you Christians reading this know enough about your God from the Bible to see that Mormonism is mutually exclusive from Christianity and is blasphemous. [Even Hugh Hewitt knows (intellectually) the former. ] They cannot both be true. But the Mormon church is trying to redefine the word "Christian," just like the  homosexuals are trying to redefine the word "marriage." Words mean things. The Jesus of the Bible is not the spirit brother of the devil, a polygamist man who had to earn his godhood by learning secret passwords and handshakes in Herod's temple, etc.

If the Mormon church really wanted to speak their truth, they should say "the Mormon church is the ONLY Christian faith in the world..." since they believe THEY are the One True church. (Hey, Catholics - what do you think about that?) "...and since we are the ONLY Christian faith in the world, whatever growth we have is, by definition, the fastest."

We call it lazy reporting when The Old Media reporters simply spit out the junk sent to them over the fax machine. In fact, Mr. Medved recently blogged about "Journalistic Malpractice!" So I'm surprised he isn't more discriminating here, and it makes me wonder now how trustworthy the rest of his facts are.

The fact is, no one really knows how many Mormons there are because there's been no independent audit. Most everyone seems comfortable blithely accepting the church's word for it.  Blindly trust if you want. But VERIFY.

But we already know that Mormons lie about such things. Mr. Medved should know this, because his people were outraged that Mormons were being baptized for dead Jews. The Jewish people asked the Mormon church to stop, which it said it would. But then it was learned the church violated its agreement! (Would someone from Chicago please remind me of the Mormon promises made about the lighting when the Glenview temple was built near (not AT) Chicago?)

For the longest time, we who minister to Mormons have suspected the church has been lying about its numbers, to puff themselves up. For example, they never seem to reduce their count, even when people leave the church in droves after finding it's not true. Even when the church gives official notice via mail that former members are off the roll. This is a great line from one account documenting her surprising experience:

Two years ago I discovered that Mormonism — like the old Hotel California in the Eagles' song — is something that you can check out of anytime, but you can never really leave.

Like Muslims, they don't understand how you could leave the One True church. As with Fundamentalist Muslims, Mormons in the old days - and even lately - murder you for leaving, thinking they're doing you a favor.

We've heard, but can't prove, that the Mormon church automatically counts as members all babies born under the covenant (born of a temple Mormon husband and wife "sealed for all time and eternity" during the "Celestial Marriage" ritual in the Mormon temple) after they're two years old or so. (Allowing for infant mortality.) They count them as members regardless of whether they made any kind of commitment to the church. (It's hard to make a commitment when you're only 2, but this is consistent with Mormon doctrine.) So now I guess it depends on what the meaning of "member" is.

We've also heard, but can't prove, that they don't take names off their membership role until 110 years later, figuring you have to have died by then and maybe they ought to finally take your name down. (Barring any type of legal threat... but then again, who knows? The books are secret.)

This is the type of stuff you can expect with a Mormon President. You Jewish people - you should know better. You Christians - you should know better too now.

Don't vote for a Mormon for President. Don't vote for Mitt Romney.

And like God said in the Bible, "Test EVERYTHING." That would include the usually believable, usually credible Michael Medved.
