Mitt Romney on abortion. Closer than most.
And for that, I rejoice.(I try to make the photos on this blog funny.
But this is no laughing matter.)Rush Limbaugh on Mitt Romney
I've been trying to tell you that Mitt Romney panders, but now it's official.
Rush Limbaugh said so. Twice. First on his Tuesday, September 4 show and again, in a replay sound bite on Wednesday, September 5. (I'd post the audio clip but it's late, I'm tired, and Townhall is making it hard for me to post.) So now it's official.
Still. I rejoice a little bit about something the pandering Mitt Romney said during the
September 5 GOP debate held in New Hampshire. How can I rejoice about something Mitt Romney said that he doesn't believe? Let me explain.
A lesson from Paul, the Apostle
In the Bible, there's a letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi while he was in prison.
In those days, there weren't denominations of men, like Baptists, Methodists and Pentecostals as there are today. (Although the seeds of denominations were already starting to sprout. See
1 Corinthians 1:12-13.) Rather, the church was united, and even though Christians in the city met in different homes, they all considered themselves one church, the church in the city of Philippi.
Paul was in prison for preaching the Gospel. Back then, even as today, preaching the Gospel can get you in trouble with the authorities.
Especially the Mormon authorities. (In the United States?)
While some Christians were emboldened by Paul's example and preached in Paul's stead, others tried to make it worse for Paul's upcoming trial by purposely stirring things up. Even though they didn't believe that Jesus was God in the flesh, the Savior of the world, the Jewish Messiah, they preached it anyway, hoping to plant evidence around town that Paul was inciting a riot and insurrection.
This is one of the many reasons I believe the Bible is true. Completed 2000 years ago, it still rings true today. Doesn't this sound like something evil people do?
Here's a story from just last month were Canadian police did the same thing at the SPP summit!
They sent in agents provocateur to stir things up!Here's how Paul described the situation and the surprising thing he concluded:
Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice... Philippians 1:14-18
So even though some were preaching Christ for the wrong reason, Paul was happy because, good motives or bad, the truth about Jesus was being preached. And so I have to rejoice over something Mitt Romney said during the debate.
The truth about "abortion"
When asked about abortion during the New Hampshire GOP debate, Mitt Romney said:
...that, that for many people, that is considered - a - an ACT OF MURDER, to have an abortion. It is without question the taking of a human life.
And I believe that a civilized society must respect the sanctity of the human life.
Well, AMEN! Too bad he doesn't believe the it. But at least he said that abortion is murder, which is more than most Conservatives will say.
Remember what Orwell taught about language in his book
1984?
Whoever controls the language controls thought. So when someone asks you what you think about "abortion," don't let them get away with controlling the language. Do what Leftist Liberal
Erwin Chemerinsky always does. Redefine the question for them. Say, "The real question is, what do I think about murdering the unborn?"
Hopefully, the answer is obvious. Even to the person who asked the question. Even little girls know, when the baby kicks, that there's a baby in there. Not a "fetus."
Note that Mitt Romney did NOT say that HE believed abortion was an act of murder. Rather, he said, "for many people that is considered an act of murder." Still, he got that right.
Then he makes a statement reminiscent of Bill Clinton and parsing words. (Remember that
Mitt Romney told Jan Mickleson that you have to read Mormon church statements like a lawyer.) He said "it [abortion] is without question the taking of a human life."
Sounds good, doesn't it? But is that the same as saying he thinks abortion is murder? No. It all depends on what the meaning of "murder" is. There's some legitimacy to this, but not when it comes to abortion.
Not that I'm defending Mitt Romney, but I'm trying to help you see how he, like a lawyer, is parsing words. You see, taking of human life is not necessarily murder. For example, God commands us, even today, to execute those who murder others. (See
Genesis 9:5-6) That is not murder. That is killing, the taking of human life. Same when someone is trying to murder you. To defend yourself by killing them is not murder. Same if you kill a rapist or kidnapper. The difference is motive. Selfish, greedy gain? That is sin. Or protecting life - yours, others or society's. That is righteous.
Part of the confusion comes from a cursory "reading" of the Bible and an unfortunate translation of the Hebrew in the King James Version, which, at one time, had permeated our culture. But as Mort Kondrake, of
The Beltway Boys correctly noted (Hugh Hewitt's show, July 27, 2007, 2nd hour), the commandment is "Thou shall not murder." All you have to do is read the Bible for yourself to see that God makes a distinction between killing and murder. It's okay to kill. He commands that. But it is sin to murder.
So you see, Mitt Romney's second statement isn't as strong as the first. He can honestly say (at least after the baby kicks) that abortion is the taking of a human life. But he doesn't see that act as murder, as we'll see next. It's a prelude to pander.
Take away the "Atta boy."
Now, remember, Rush Limbaugh says Mitt Romney panders. In the next breath Mitt Romney said:
But we have TWO lives involved here. A mom and an unborn child. We have to have concern for BOTH lives...
Now he's trying to pander to the Left, who says it's okay to murder an unborn baby "in the case of incest, rape or health of the mother."
I'm sorry that there is incest in the world and that women are raped. But the solution is not to murder the baby for someone else's sin, but to execute the sinner. (Rapist.) As for "health of the mother," our medical technology is so good, that's not an issue today. That is, we do NOT have to kill the baby so the mother may live. Truth be known, most murder of the unborn is simply after the fact birth control and "health of the mother" has come to mean the unwanted baby will be a headache.
Even if we had to make a choice, this is the wrong choice. In the Bible, what you see is the truest demonstration of love. When it comes to the life of the mother or her baby, the mothers were the ones who died. They sacrificed their lives for their babies. "("Greater love has no one than this.... " See
John 15:13)
Really, in this day and age, there are not TWO lives involved. There is only the life of the yet to be delivered baby.
Kick out the spirit baby
In addition, Mitt Romney's Mormonism doesn't teach that all abortion is the taking of a human life. As I've
documented before, the Mormon church teaches that the spirit baby from the pre-existence hasn't come from Kolob to inhabit the fetus until the baby kicks. So until then, according to Mormonism, the baby really is just a fetus, simply a mass of tissue. (Like a cancer?)
Glad but sad
So I'm glad Mitt Romney said that some of us consider abortion an act of murder. He got that right.
Do any of you remember the old "Fugitive" TV show, starring David Janssen as Dr. Richard Kimble? In
Episode 103,
Kimble becomes acquainted with one worker, a Hungarian immigrant named Josef Karac, who Kimble discovers is a doctor wanted by the police [for MURDER!] for an abortion that he performed years earlier.
We ALL knew it was murder then.
I'm sad he doesn't think it's murder. But I'm glad he didn't lie about it. But I'm sad he tried to trick us with Bill Clintonish tricks.
Those of you who think abortion is murder, don't be fooled by Mitt Romney's Clintonesque tricks. While it's true that the President of the United States can't directly affect legislation regarding this barbaric practice, Bill Clinton showed us that a President's thinking DOES affect our mores. (Think "Giving a 'Monica'" and how our teenagers have been negatively affected.)
Also, the President can appoint judges who think like us... or think like him. If Mitt Romney doesn't think abortion is murder, why would you expect him to nominate judges who think it is? Please, don't vote for Mitt Romney.
Please help me get the Word out, 'cause I can't do it all by myself.
