This is Mitt Romney's home state?
Census map from 2000 showing
percentage of Mormons.
More green - as in money? - the more Mormons.
The Mormon double standard
Mike Huckabee is taking a lot of heat for appealing to Evangelical Christians.
Rush Limbaugh calls it "identity politics." Hugh Hewitt likes to call it "'Christian Identity' politics," perhaps a dig at former Gov. Huckabee (and Evangelical Christians?) since "
Christian Identity" is a White Supremacist movement.
The implication is that Evangelical Christians are mindless voting for Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist preacher, ostensibly Christian.
But when Mormons mindlessly vote for Brother Romney because he's Mormon, no one complains. To do so would, of course, be "anti-Mormon bigotry."
I'm not going to debate the rightness or wrongness of "identity politics" here. Obviously, if a man claims to be a Christian but has no fruit, it would be silly to vote for him based on his claim. However, if he is grieved over the murder of babies,
acts justly, loves mercy, walks humbly, reads the Constitution the way he reads the Bible (fundamentally), then it's okay to vote for him because he's Christian. Christians are supposed to be of one mind, guided by the same Spirit. If Jesus is Lord of your life and the same Jesus is Lord of a Presidential candidate's life, then aren't we one in Christ, being led to accomplish the same good works?
Similarly, in the case of this blog, I won't vote for a Mormon for President because I know about
the oath of allegiance Mormons swear to their church (leaders). And because, consistent with that, his jesus is not my Jesus. Nothing a Mormon says will change those facts.
Or course, I wouldn't vote for a Liberal either, simply because they identify themselves as Liberal. (By doing so, they say something about their beliefs - or lack of them.) I doubt Rush Limbaugh would vote for a Liberal either. So isn't he practicing "identity politics" too?
Utah, not Michigan?
Now, Michigan is Mitt Romney's "home" state.
He was born there and grew up there. His dad was Governor of Michigan. It's expected that a Presidential candidate will win his home state. Remember how surprised everyone was when Al Gore didn't win his home state of Tennessee? Yet there's some question whether Mitt Romney will win Michigan this Tuesday. As of this writing,
Mitt Romney is polling third in Michigan (And, in typical Mitt Romney style, he's funneling all his money there, in an attempt to buy votes.)
But Hugh Hewitt is quoting
Redstate who predicts Mitt Romney will win Utah.
I think they're wrong that Senator McCain will win his home state of Arizona, but that's for someone else's blog.
Now, why do you suppose Mitt Romney would win Utah? Aside from the Olympics, what has Mitt Romney in common with Utah?
Could it be... Mormonism?
The Mormon church newspaper there thinks so.Shocked, shocked, I say...
I've already posted
how Mormon enclaves in Arizona are big on Mitt Romney.
Is it any surprise that Mormon heavy Provo, UT (home of Brigham Young University)
was the top contributor to Mitt Romney? (As of November.)
You can hear it when callers call in to talk shows fawning over Mitt Romney. Mostly Mormons, no doubt. (I had a post about that here, but it's mysteriously missing from Townhall.)
Where's that 5 million coming from?
It's funny (or hypocritical?) how excited Hugh Hewitt gets when Mitt Romney pulls in 5 million dollars in a day (yesterday), but how unexcited he was when
Ron Paul sets an all time record for one day fund raising, pulling in 6 million dollars.Anyway, I wonder where the money came from? Specifically, I wonder if it was primarily Mormon money? And how much of that Mormon money was his own?
Unfortunately, we won't know
until the next round of Campaign Finance reports comes out. But it's interesting that
two of his dial-a-thon main men are Utahns. So, isn't it interesting how people will accuse Mike Huckabee supporters of identity politics but no one accuses Mitt Romney's Mormon base of same?
Hugh Hewitt said the other day that a lot of LDS (i.e. Mormons) will NOT vote for Mike Huckabee! Wow...
I thought Mormons were Christians! (NOT!) Isn't THAT Christian identity politics? Not voting for a man because he's Christian?
What hypocrisy! If it's okay that Mormons won't vote for a man because he's Christian (and Mr. Hewitt did NOT call it "anti-Christian bigotry"), then it's okay if you don't vote for a man because he's Mormon.
But that post is for another day.
But go ahead. Vote a Mormon in the White House. Like the Emperor without clothes, no one will dare report the naked truth when Mormons and Mormonism affect President Mitt Romney and his decisions. Already they are affecting his financing and, potentially, his election.
