Does anyone in a cult know they're in a cult?

A senseless question for Mitt Romney
Screen shot of Mr. Monk joins a cult
Purely coincidence and not related to this blog at all.
Thought you might want to know that
"Mr. Monk joins a cult"
premiers on January 11th on the cable USAnetwork.
The story line is
"Mr. Monk becomes entranced by the cult's charismatic leader."
(They have to deprogram him, the pull is so great.)
But just coincidence.
Has nothing to do with Joseph Smith, Mitt Romney and Mormonism.

REPOST

Judging by the search engines, this was a popular post from October 31, 2006. Previously titled "A senseless question for Mitt Romney," this was one of my Featured Posts. But for some reason, it mysteriously vanished from Townhall a couple months ago. The Townhall editor says he doesn't know what caused it to go drop off. He is assuming a technical glitch altlhough unlike previous technical glitches, he has been unable to restore the post.

Here then, is an updated version of this popular post. As this was my 5th post when this blog started, I have since repeated this theme and documented it fuller in this blog. (Troll around here to find the stories.)

Building on the post in October 2006 just before this one, it's always enlightening to hear Hugh Hewitt interview (or cross examine?) an arrogant Liberal reporter about his bias. Almost without exception, they deny they are biased to the Left or that there is a bias to the Left in the old media, despite the multitude of evidence Mr. Hewitt presents. It's always comical because any objective observer can see the reporter's bias from the company he keeps, the things he says and the things he does. (Owns no gun, favors murdering babies, consistently, mindlessly votes Democrat... when candid enough to disclose the latter.) And the bias is obvious from the sound bite montages of Talking Points that Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham assemble, corroborating the monolithic culture of the media. But getting "journalists" to see and admit their bias is a futile exercise. They're blind. It's like asking a Fudamental Muslim if he's biased against Jews. They will tell you "No. I am not biased against Jews. I simply believe they should be annihilated and Israel should be driven into the sea."

These people are trapped in a culture. They've fallen and can't get up.

Along similar lines, it would be pointless to ask Mitt Romney—or any Mormon, for that matter—-if he's in a cult. Which I expect will be a popular question in 2007. But does anyone in a cult know they're in a cult?

That was a rhetorical question, but for the Mormons out there who will argue the point, telling me they're not in a cult, the answer is "No. No one who's in a cult knows they're in a cult. If they did, they would get out." Just like the biased reporter, he cannot see he's trapped.

UPDATE: Since first writing this more than a year ago, I've come to see that it is not only those on the Left who are biased journalists. Among others, Hugh Hewitt has demonstrated his bias for Mormon Mitt Romney, "cherry picking" the stories he presents. Even callers to the Hught Hewitt show have been calling in protest. (And then there were the mysteriously vanishing comments critical of Mr. Hewitt's book on Amazon.)

And yet, Mr. Hewitt, like any Leftist reporter, insists he's not biased.

Of course, I don't know what Mr. Hewitt asked Mitt Romney for his upcoming nor how aggressively he asked. Based on his friendly attitude toward Mormons so far, I'm expecting softball questions and/or no follow through. For example, on his radio show many months ago, he quizzed some "scholars" from BYU about DNA evidence vs. the Book of Mormon. To his credit, Mr. Hewitt asked the scholars how the evidence would affect their beliefs, since the BOM, "the most correct book on earth," claims Native Americans are of Jewish descent. Whereas everyone knows they are Mongoloid, even before the DNA evidence. (Just look.)

In typical fashion, despite the fact that we acquit and (sometimes) execute people on DNA evidence, the answer was "It wouldn't matter" because, in Mormonism, facts don't matter. At least one of the "scholars" admitted he bases his conclusions on "personal revelation," which is code for "I've prayed about it and I feel it's true." He can go by his feelings if he wants - some people think there are 72 virgins waiting for them in heaven too. But this makes a farce of "the best in intelligent talk radio," ostensibly considering facts in evidence. As a lawyer and sometime relentless interrogator, you would expect Mr. Hewitt to jump all over that to force the point, as he does with Liberals. But he didn't.

How I wish he would be as blunt and aggressive with Mitt Romney as he is with Lefties. But it seems Mitt Romney is a friend. Maybe a good friend. And it's hard to challenge good friends, putting them on the spot. Better to not be unequally yoked.

Interestingly, you'll find Mormons will argue like those on the Left, claiming blunt questioning is akin to the Spanish Inquisition. They often resort to ad hominem retorts. Let's see if I'm Right.

UPDATE:

of course, time has proved me right. Asking any questions about Mitt Romney's Mormonism is immediately labled "Anit-Mormon bigotry" even though on today's Hugh Hewitt show (Wednesday, January 02, 2008) it's okay to ask pointed questions about Islam and challenge Muslim beliefs. In fact, the guest said it was necessary to start a dialogue .  (2nd hour)

Mitt Romney can mention Mormonism in his "faith speech," but you had better not ask Mitt Romney anything about his god, his jesus, his secret Mormon temple oath.

Peruse the comments left by Mormons on this blog and see for yourself. Anyone who challenges Mormon beliefs is automatically a "critic" instead of an honest "investigator." [Because, of course, they've prayed about Mormonism and know it's true, despite the facts. Therefore, ANYTHING you say, even quoting their own Scripture, is Anti-Mormon. I even heard some Mormon Missionaries tell a Christian Evangelist once that he was quoting from Anti-Mormon literature. He was quoting parts of the (current) Book of Mormon  that contradicted their own doctrine! I burst out laughing when they said that.]

If you read the comments they leave me, they're very polite too. (What did Jesus say about what comes out of a man?)

But go ahead. Vote a Mormon in the White House. Elect cultist Mitt Romney for President. It'll be one long four year episode. Instead of TV, it will be real life. Unlike TV, it won't be funny. Nor will you be able to turn it off.
