2000 Census showing percentage of Mormons per county.
Can you guess where Mesa and Gilbert, Arizona are?It is to laugh
I suppose this was predictable, but I still laughed when I read the headline.
Romney campaign gets boost from Mesa, GilbertYou have to know your way around Arizona to know why this is funny. You see,
Mesa and Gilbert, two adjacent cities in Arizona, are Mormon strongholds. Mesa has the first Mormon temple built outside of Utah, so you know it's Mormon heavy. (You can see the Mormon migration in green on the census map, as they came out of Utah along the east side of the state.) Gilbert
is adjacent to the south of Mesa, and is basically Mormon overflow and migration, as Hispanics start to overwhelm them in Mesa.
To be fair, Mesa and Gilbert don't show (yet) in green on the census map.
Both are in Maricopa County and are dwarfed by the county. Maricopa county is huge and includes Phoenix (
now the 5th largest city). Thankfully, the county is predominately NOT Mormon, and so has a more neutral color on the map. (Although
Arizona has a disproportional amount of Mormons in government.)
Still, you can see how, 80 years ago, when Arizona was still a cowboy state, the city of Mesa, on the southeast corner of Maricopa County, was the final stop in the Mormon southerly migration and isiolated from the small town of Phoenix.
I'm not in a cult!
From
the newspaper story:
Barbara Householder said she supports Mitt Romney because of his stand on family values. The fact that Romney, like Householder, is a Mormon makes him even more appealing and is part of the reason her family contributed $500 to his campaign, she said. [Yeah, right.]
"His solid reputation speaks for itself, but knowing he's from the same religion tells me he shares our core values," said Householder ... "It helps me hope and believe that he'll be the best president for this country."
U.S. Sen. John McCain's campaign for the Republican presidential nomination leads Arizona in fundraising, bringing in $2.4 million in the first three quarters of 2007. But residents of Mesa and Gilbert have given far more to Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts: $548,000 to the $109,000 raised there by McCain, according to Federal Election Commission records.
Mesa ZIP code 85213, where Householder's business is located, contributed $136,000, the most of any Arizona ZIP code for Romney, followed by $128,000 in Mesa ZIP code 85205. Romney had raised a total of $1.2 million in Arizona and $62 million nationally through Sept. 30.
Political experts say Mesa and Gilbert are examples of areas with large Mormon populations rallying behind Romney. Nine of the top 25 ZIP codes contributing to Romney are in Utah, where most of the population is Mormon, and Utah also leads the nation in per-capita giving to his campaign, FEC records show.
UPDATE November 13, 2007: I tripped across this tidbit today. "
Utah No. 2 in Romney contributions."
It's only No. 2 because California has more people, probably with more money. If they tracked percentage of residents who gave to Mitt Romney, as with the Arizona story, I bet Utah would be No.1. (And who knows... it may be No. 1 in total giving by the time this is over.)
But I'm sure this is all coincidence. Mormonism isn't a cult. Mormons wouldn't vote in blocks. Or would they? From the story:
"The LDS connection is significant," said Kirk Jowers, director of the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics and a Romney supporter.
Not just in Utah, either, Jowers said, noting top-ranked California is also home to a large number of Mormons. "California is the golden state for Romney. It has a sizable LDS component, a lot of money and a lot of people," he said."
Flakey?
But Rhett Flake, a Snowflake pharmacist who contributed $370 to Romney's campaign, said he and other Mormons share more with the candidate than religion. [Yes, Arizona has a Congressman with the same last name.]
“Of course he'll get support from Mormons. But Romney should get support from people of all faiths,” Flake said.
“A lot of people attack Romney because he's Mormon, but he has the same values most Americans believe in, especially Christians: a strong belief in God and in family values,” Flake said.
And THAT'S the problem I've been trying to warn you about. Because the god of Mormonism is not the God of Christianity, Mitt Romney cannot have the same values in family values. As I've said before,
Mormonism does NOT teach that murdering the unborn (a.k.a. "abortion") is murder! Christians believe that "May those who curse [Israel] be cursed and those who bless you [Israel] be blessed." Literally.
But Mormons and Mitt Romney believe they are the true Jews and that their jesus will rule and reign from Missouri. So they are the true Israel and if they are blessed, their god will bless the United States.
See, I told you
Romney has raised $3,635 to McCain's $220 in Snowflake, where many residents are Mormon.
Five percent of Maricopa County's population is Mormon, and Mesa and Gilbert have a large share of that group. The area also is home to the Mesa Arizona Temple.
Arizona's figures didn't surprise J. Quin Monson, a Brigham Young University assistant professor of political science. He said Romney is having success raising money from Mormons around the country.
“Pockets of LDS areas in Arizona are falling into the Romney fundraising network,” Monson said. “He is drawing on his personal network, especially Mormons and business people.”
Two Arizona political experts said Romney has obvious appeal to Mormons.
“The East Valley is a Mormon bastion,” said Bruce Merrill, a pollster and retired Arizona State University professor. “The thing to see as the election goes on is if Romney can broaden his fundraising from Mormons to others.”
Hmmm... this is somewhat reminiscent of Joseph Smith in Nauvoo, IL, where, according to
this Mormon site, he "served on the city council and eventually became mayor. As mayor he also served as presiding judge of the municipal court and as registrar of deeds. With the rank of lieutenant general, he led the Nauvoo Legion, or municipal militia."
This is also reminiscent of
Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and Rajneeshpuram, who also took over a town in Oregon.
You see, no one who's trapped in a cult knows they're in a cult. If they did, they would get out.
Unfortunately, an earlier post about this truth is recently missing. It's hard to know if Townhall recently removed my post from last October or if it's a technical problem at Townhall. (Earlier on there were technical problems with posts missing in action.) If they removed it, I don't know why. It was a popular hit on Google.
In any event, the post was "A senseless question for Mitt Romney." Google for it and use
Google's cache feature to find it. I'll try to post it again and see if Townhall removes it.
Just pray about it
Curtis Clouse, a Mormon and president of a painting contracting firm in Mesa, said he was most attracted to Romney's skills as a former CEO and leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City when he decided to contribute $250.
"I'm a business owner myself, and I FEEL [emphasis mine] he'll be able to run government the way it should be run: like a business, with people expected to perform and produce," Clouse said.
That word "feel" is Mormon code, for "I've prayed about it, and I have this feeling, 'a burning in the bosom,' so that I know it's true."Only if character does NOT matter
"Religion should not be an issue if a candidate is qualified to hold office, which Romney sure is," Clouse added.
So then Mr. Clouse would be happy
with a Wahhabi Muslim for President? Or a Raelian? I would not. That would be foolish, for, despite what he assures you, you know what he believes and what he has promised his god to do.
Depends on the meaning of the word "a lot"
I've told you before that Mormons are quite comfortable
lying for the Lord, figuring the ends justifies the means. (Unfortunately, some of you who call yourselves Christian, who support Mitt Romney because (you say) he's the only one with enough money (his own) to beat Hillary, you are guilty of the same thinking.)
Jason Rose, state director for Romney's campaign, said Romney has done well in Arizona because he has spent a lot of time campaigning here.
It's hard to prove a negative, but "No, he hasn't." According to my sources, Mitt Romney has only been in town a few times. (Three?) I think we all know Mitt Romney has been spending his time (and money) in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Please help me get the Word out, 'cause I can't do it all by myself.
