Hyp-CROSS-isy
Hugh Hewitt, who claims to understand Mormonism, reported on his Wednesday show (February 7) how upset alumni of
William & Mary are about the removal of the cross from their chapel. (A concession to the ACLU.)
But at the same time, he's endorsing Mormon Mitt Romney for President.
Doesn't Mr. Hewitt, who knows "all about the Mormon faith," know that Mormons eschew the cross? You will not find a cross on a Mormon ward building (their name for a church building), NOR will you ever see a Mormon wearing a cross.
Okay, I'll give you the cult answer and tell you what Mormons always say about this.
They say, "If your son was murdered with a knife, would you wear the murder weapon around your neck?"
Or something similar. [Go ahead. Try the test with your Mormon acquaintances. Tell them you notice they don't wear crosses. Ask them, "Why?" See for yourself it's a cult. They'll all give the same answer because they all think the same.]
In contrast, while Christians are saddened that the cross is where Jesus shed his blood for us (NOT in the garden of Gethsemane, as Mormonism teaches - He died on the CROSS, not in the garden.), we are grateful He died voluntarily as the world's single biggest act of love. By dying for the sins of the whole world, He atoned for our sins on the cross. We who choose to accept His sacrifice and have our sins forgiven are saved from hell. That's why we Christians happily break out into the song about the cross,
"On a hill far away...." Note what the Apostle Paul — a REAL Apostle — said:
"The message of the cross is foolish to those who are perishing... 1 Corinthians 1:18
How amazing that God saw this in advance about those who would reject Him. (In addition to Mormons, includes Jews and Muslims too. The Catholic problem is more subtle. By constantly crucifying Jesus during their mass, they deny Jesus' finished work on the cross.)
Mr. Hewitt and others who claim to be Conservative claim to be vexed when the cross is removed from symbols such as
the old LA County seal. But they should expect more of the same if Mormon Mitt Romney becomes President.
Look, Mitt Romney has already demonstrated how his faith affects his thinking when it comes to remotely spiritual decisions, which is only natural.
He didn't care about the Jewish people's requirement for kosher food when he was Governor of Massachusetts. Why should he care about some old Jewish traditions, especially when he believes
that Mormons are really God's chosen people? Whereas, I, as a Christian man, would unabashedly show favor to the Jewish people were I President, since I, a wild branch, have been grafted into their tree (Romans 11:17) and especially since I believe God's promise that those who bless Israel will be blessed.
Look, a person's beliefs can't help but affect their decisions, either subtly or overtly, regardless their claims to the contrary. A Fundamentalist Muslim President will use his power to destroy Israel - and maybe us. An Atheist President will probably allow pornography and encourage pedophilia. Were I President, I would purposely try to prevent homosexuals from infiltrating our schools, our churches, etc. So let's be straight about this.
Given Mormonism's disdain for the cross, why would you think a Mormon President, like Mitt Romeny, would direct the Justice Department to fight cross keeping issues? Wouldn't he rather save money, as he tried to do with the Jewish people's kosher food?
Admittedly the cross thing is a somewhat trivial issue (although like
Rudy Giuliani's "broken window theory," where graffiti leads to more heinous crime, taking God out of government has slippery slope implications). But it highlights larger ones. You will always have a President's theology affecting their decisions. Especially as they nominate judges, a legacy that will far outlive a bad President's 4 year term. You're voting for the theology you want, be it Muslim or Mormon, Homosexual or Christian. You HAVE to choose. I choose Christian.
Don't be stupid. (Yes, that's a Biblical term. See Proverbs 12:1) You can't separate a man from his religion. This is a character issue. Don't vote a Mormon into the White House. Don't vote for Mitt Romney.
